Ranking in ChatGPT means being the brand an AI assistant names when someone asks for a recommendation, a comparison, or an answer. There is no results page and no position two. The model either mentions you or it doesn't. This guide explains how ChatGPT and similar assistants choose what to cite, and what you can do, starting this week, to become one of their answers.
If you have been watching your organic traffic flatten while your buyers tell you "I asked ChatGPT and it suggested you" (or worse, suggested your competitor), this is the discipline behind fixing that. It goes by a few names: GEO (generative engine optimization), LLM SEO, answer engine optimization. Same goal: brand visibility in AI search.
How ChatGPT decides which brands to mention
ChatGPT builds answers from two layers.
The first is training data. The model has read a huge snapshot of the public web, so it "knows" brands that were consistently described across many credible pages before its cutoff date. You influence this layer slowly, over months, by existing in the right places.
The second layer is live retrieval. When a question needs fresh or specific information, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a handful of pages, and composes an answer with citations. This layer works a lot like classic search, which means you can influence it in weeks, not months. Perplexity and Google's AI Mode work the same way.
The practical conclusion: your classic SEO foundation still matters, because retrieval leans on search indexes. But what gets you quoted is different from what gets you ranked. AI assistants lift short, self-contained, factual passages. Pages that bury the answer under 400 words of warm-up rarely get cited, even when they rank.
Step 1: Make your brand machine-readable
An AI model can only recommend you if it understands what you are. Check that one sentence on your homepage and your about page states it plainly: who you are, what you do, where you do it. Ours reads "boutique digital agency in Athens for brand, marketing and AI products". A model that reads that sentence never has to guess.
Then reinforce the same description everywhere your brand appears: LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories, partner pages. Inconsistent descriptions dilute the entity; identical ones compound it.
Step 2: Write answers, not just articles
Take the ten questions your buyers actually ask and give each one a direct answer within the first two sentences of a dedicated section. Definition first, explanation after.
A useful test: copy any section of your page and paste it into a chat with no context. If it still makes sense on its own, it is quotable. If it needs the paragraph above it to mean anything, the model will skip it.
FAQ blocks, definition boxes, comparison tables and stat callouts all survive this test naturally. That is why they get cited so often.
Step 3: Add structured data
Schema markup (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article) labels your content so machines don't have to infer it. It will not make weak content quotable, but it removes ambiguity about who published what, and ambiguity is what keeps borderline pages out of AI answers. If your site already runs clean schema, verify it covers your service pages, not just blog posts.
Step 4: Get named on pages you don't own
When a model composes "best digital agencies in Athens", it draws heavily on third-party sources: industry directories, "top 10" lists, press coverage, review platforms, Reddit and forum threads. A brand that only talks about itself on its own domain looks unverified.
Audit where your category is already being answered. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the exact questions your buyers would ask, note which sources get cited, and work on appearing in those specific places. This is the highest-leverage activity in GEO and the least automated one.
Step 5: Let the crawlers in
Verify your robots.txt does not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot. Plenty of sites blocked AI crawlers in 2023 on principle and forgot about it. Blocked crawlers mean no retrieval citations, full stop. While you are there, check that your key pages render their content server-side; assistants read HTML, and heavy client-side rendering still hides content from some of them.
Step 6: Measure mentions, not rankings
You cannot install a rank tracker for ChatGPT, but you can measure. Run a fixed set of buyer questions through the major assistants monthly and log which brands get named. Watch your referral analytics for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai sources. Both are crude, and both are enough to tell you whether the needle moves.
Expect the first citations from retrieval-based answers within four to eight weeks of publishing quotable content. Expect training-layer mentions, the unprompted ones, to take six months or more of consistent third-party presence.
What this looks like in practice
We run this exact playbook, for our own site and for clients, as part of the SEO and GEO work inside our marketing services. The pattern that repeats: technical fixes land in week one, quotable content ships over the first month, third-party presence builds from there. No single trick, no secret prompt, just structured visibility work aimed at machines as well as people.
If you want to know where your brand stands today, ask us for a GEO audit. We map the questions that matter in your category, test them across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and hand you the gap list. Get in touch or explore how we combine this with AI consulting.
FAQ
Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT answers? No. There is no paid placement in ChatGPT's organic answers today. Advertising is arriving in some AI products, but the recommendation layer is earned, which is exactly why early movers gain a moat.
Does ranking #1 on Google mean ChatGPT will cite me? Not necessarily. Retrieval favors pages that answer in self-contained passages. A page ranking fifth with a clean, direct answer often gets cited over a page ranking first that hides its answer.
How long does GEO take to show results? Four to eight weeks for citations in retrieval-based answers, if your content is genuinely quotable. Six months or more for the model to name you unprompted, because that depends on your footprint across the wider web.
Is GEO different from SEO? They overlap heavily. SEO gets you into the indexes that AI assistants search. GEO makes your content the piece an assistant actually quotes. You need both, and most of the work strengthens both at once.
