The New Athenian
Building Athens' Most Refined Digital Editorial Platform from Scratch
VISIT WEBSITEAthens has always had a story worth telling. It finally has a platform that tells it right. The New Athenian is not just a publication. It's a declaration that Athens — modern, multilingual, restless, and underestimated — deserves world-class storytelling. A bilingual English-Greek editorial platform covering the culture, people, and ideas reshaping one of Europe's most fascinating cities. Ruler built their digital home from scratch: a custom WordPress news portal with a luxury aesthetic, a backend engineered for the pace of daily publishing, and an experience that makes every reader feel like they've just been handed the best magazine in the city.
The Challenge
Running a premium editorial brand in 2026 is a different game than it was five years ago. The internet is louder, cheaper content is everywhere, and readers can smell low-effort from the first scroll. To earn attention and keep it, The New Athenian needed a digital platform that matched the quality of its journalism at every touchpoint.
The brief was deceptively demanding: luxury visual language that never slows down. A CMS so intuitive the team could publish daily without ever thinking about the technology. Two full languages, not one site with a translate button. And a reader experience refined enough to turn a first visit into a habit.

Key Features
Luxury that loads fast
The design sets a standard the moment the page opens, considered typography, editorial image treatments, a visual rhythm that says "this publication has taste." The New Athenian is built to look exceptional and move fast, on every device, every day.
A backend the editorial team actually loves
The site updates daily. That means the CMS had to be as carefully designed as the front end. Publishing workflows are fast, clean, and structured so the team can focus entirely on the writing, not on the technology holding it.
Two languages. One coherent identity.
Multilingual sites usually feel like one site carrying the weight of two. Not this one. English and Greek each have their own editorial flow, their own SEO structure, their own content rhythm built in from day one. Readers on both sides get an experience that feels native, not adapted.
Live search that respects the reader's time
When a reader wants something specific, they should find it instantly. Live search surfaces articles, authors, and issues in real time. The kind of feature that feels small until you use it, and then you can't imagine the site without it.
Navigate like you're holding the print edition
The New Athenian thinks in issues and bylines. So does the filtering system. Readers can move through the archive by edition, by author, by story.
Outcome
The New Athenian launched with a platform that finally matched what the editorial team had always been building toward. A daily publishing operation with no technical friction. A reading experience that holds attention long enough to earn loyalty. A digital product that looks, feels, and performs like the premium brand it is.
Athens is transforming. The New Athenian is documenting every step of it. We made sure the world can actually see it.
